So what do you do on those rare Sundays when you find yourself with little to do and itchy feet? Well the log fire and epic views at the Glen Clova Hotel is the answer. For as long as I can remember I have been going to this secluded little hotel up the glens outside Kirriemuir for a variety of different reasons. Meals with the family, a day fishing, a knees up with mates and even a short break in the stunning self catering lodges have been some of the reasons that I keep finding myself at this great little place. The restaurant itself forms part of a large conservatory that overlooks the glen and comes complete with a massive log fire that seems to stay permanently lit throughout the colder months. Whenever I know I am going up Glen Clova I always get excited at the prospect of soup of the day which never fails to disappoint. Aside from the legendary soup they have a large menu that can accommodate every taste and as you might expect the haggis, neeps and tatties is excellent!
Head past the restaurant and you find a charming wee room where the locals drink with yet another log fire and old fashioned benches. Walking in there makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. You half expect to see farmer Jock with his faithful sheep dog propping up the bar. At the back of the hotel is another sun lounge where you can play pool or darts whilst nursing your pint. The bedrooms at the hotel are finished to a high standard which look very comfy and the bunkhouse is an excellent choice for the rambler on a budget. However the jewel in an already glittering crown must be the two luxury self catering lodges across the car park from the hotel. Each of these stunning lodges comes with their own hot tubs and saunas and the buildings are separated from the hotel itself by a walled area allowing more privacy. The balconies look over the glen itself where the view is simply magnificent. There is nothing better than sitting in the hot tub with some mates having a beer whilst the rain is pelting down. The lodges are ideal for groups of friends or families and the adjoining doors can turn the two lodges into one gigantic pad for a really large group.
The drive to the hotel is an experience in itself, hurtling along the tiny country roads with each corner revealing scenery more impressive than the last. But what is there to do once you are up Glen Clova? Well if you can tear yourself away from the hotel then you can go fishing at Loch Brandy or Loch Heath both of which are walking distance from the hotel. Shooting is another popular sport with many different packages available depending on the time of year. Perhaps one of the greatest attractions in Glen Clova are the fine walks from a 20 minute stroll to a long trek. There is always plenty to do up Glen Clova but you can rest assured that there will be a pint and a bowl of delicious hot soup for when you get back to the hotel - Assuming you can find the will to leave in the first place!Share
