Bridgeview Station Riverside Dr, Dundee, Angus 01382 660 066 |
Sitting in the shadow of one of Scotland's most impressive structures, and close to the site of a former Victorian railway station, is a little gem called the Bridgeview restaurant.
The owners have created something really quite special in this corner of Dundee, next to the water. Maybe it was the original Victorian carriage sitting outside, or the authentic style of the building, or maybe it was down to my interest in the Tay Rail Bridge. Whatever the reason, after driving past on a weekly basis for months, something made me stop for a closer look. What I found, was a great surprise, and the motivation behind this article.
There are few places that have got it just right, balancing between the location and its past, the people, and what's on offer. Here I feel, it has all been carefully considered. I am fascinated by the history behind the Tay Rail Bridge, and it would have been so easy to forget the railway when creating Bridgeview, however for me it has been seamlessly linked, incorporating the old and the new.
Once the site of Magdalen Green Station, the building has been modelled on its original design, giving it a feel of authenticity worthy of its location. The railway carriage can only add to the atmosphere, as it is an original carriage that was in service at the time of the Tay Bridge Disaster. It's almost a shame that there is no steam engine to transport diners to and from their evening.
However in the 21st century peoples tastes have somewhat changed, and as you approach the picket fence, you begin to realise that inside is a stylish and modern environment to enjoy a meal for any occasion. The balance is struck perfectly between the Victorian history and modern day preferences. Big images of the bridge on the walls and exposed architecture show the past, whereas contemporary lighting and seating provide customers with a modern, relaxed and comfortable environment, from which they can gaze out through the full length windows, over the Tay estuary.
The experience does not end there. On entering you are greeted by very welcoming staff, one of which is the owner. His passion is evident from the outset, and if asked, he will happily take time to tell you a bit about the set up and his plans.
Their concept is simple, and it is to provide food of the highest quality to the people of Dundee, at a price that does not limit the privilege to only a few. Sure enough the prices are very reasonable, and the food... Well with Chef Dominic de Franco in the kitchen, and his background in various Michelin starred restaurants, the food is on a par with some of the best that would regard themselves out of Bridgeview's league. Every course is so delicately prepared and presented, and only the best fresh ingredients have been used to provide a culinary experience that I guarantee will have you returning for more.
The six years I have lived in Dundee, I have often heard people say there are few good restaurants, and that St. Andrews is the nearest for fantastic meals. However I strongly believe that the Bridgeview Restaurant will give any of them a run for their money, and will not leave you counting yours.Share
