Every year the BBC puts on Prom in the Park in 5 locations throughout the UK. For the last few years Glasgow has held the Scottish event on the Glasgow Greens with over 16000 people attending last year. The event is televised on BBC Scotland.
This year the event will be held in Dundee as Glasgow had an issue with sponsorship. It is a major coup for the city and will give Dundee the opportunity to host a national event.
The bad news is that whereas all the other events throughout the country will be held outside (as the name of the event suggests) the Scottish BBC Prom in the Park will be held inside the Caird Hall.
Whilst the Caird Hall is a great venue and a building that Dundee can really be proud of it can only hold about 2500 people and it isn't a park!
Let's consider for a moment:
1, The Glamis Prom has been cancelled meaning 4000 people who normally go to the event will be looking for an alternative.
2, Many of the patrons of the Glasgow event will be willing to make the journey to Dundee to see it.
3, Dundee is within 90 minutes travelling time of 90% of Scotland's population making the location much more accessible than it was before
Perhaps we can't attract 16000 people to the event but we can at least get a bit more than 2500. With the current venue too many people will be left disappointed.
The D&A information portal is creating a petition to get the event held in Camperdown Park or a similar location and you can click here to sign it.
You might argue that Scotland's weather is too erratic to hold the event outside but Glasgow managed it every year and the Dundee Flower and Food Festival is being held in the park the week before.
This is Dundee's chance to really shine and show the rest of Scotland that it is capable of putting on the best Scottish Prom in the Park ever! GO DUNDEE
